What to expect
Clinical Genetics offers support to individuals or families facing the presence or risk of a genetic disorder. Whether seeking a diagnosis or seeking information about an existing diagnosis, individuals come to the clinic for comprehensive assistance.
Dr. Saggar engages in discussions about the medical management of the disorder, identifying those at risk, outlining potential risks, and exploring available choices for family members. Dr. Saggar’s responsibility extends to coordinating clinical follow-ups, facilitating early screening for detectable issues, and implementing preventive measures to manage complications effectively.
Who needs to be seen by the Clinical genetics service?
Individuals who harbor concerns about a potentially inherited condition often seek information about their likelihood of either inheriting or transmitting that specific condition. Various tests are available for certain genetic conditions, including options during pregnancy, and discussing the available testing methods is encouraged.
In certain cases, a paediatrician might recommend an appointment for a child to seek additional opinions or to untangle complex situations. Specific genetic conditions may necessitate specialised care and management, potentially leading to additional appointments with other specialists.
What will happen at my appointment?
Typically, consultations span 45 to 60 minutes. Dr. Saggar dedicates time to address your specific concerns and construct a family tree, occasionally finding it beneficial to obtain medical details about other family members.
Of course, no relative will be approached without your explicit permission.
In some cases, a clinical examination may be recommended for you or your family. Once all necessary information is gathered, Dr. Saggar can assess the likelihood of an inherited disorder within your family and discuss the available choices for you.
What tests will need to be done at my appointment?
We may need to take a blood sample. If we feel any other tests are required, we would discuss this with you and make suitable arrangements.
